Mondaine Helvetica watches designed by Erik Spiekermann
In 2017 Mondaine– the makers of the original Swiss Helvetica watches – asked Erik Spiekermann to design three watch faces, each one dedicated to one weight of Helvetica. The three models are called Light, Regular and Bold.
His design for the Light model uses Neue Helvetica 55 Regular. This model comes in stainless steel with a mat brushed finish, with a dark brown leather bracelet with light brown stitching, or a Milanese mesh bracelet with sliding clasp.
The Regular model uses Neue Helvetica 63 Medium Extended, because the figures are very small and needed to be legible at that small size. This model comes in high polished stainless steel with a white watch face and a Milanese mesh bracelet with sliding clasp, or in stainless steel IP black plated, with a mat brushed case finish, with a black watch face and a black leather bracelet with a regular padding and black stitching.
The Bold watch has figures also set in Neue Helvetica 55 Regular, the boldness coming not from the type but the contrasting colour bands which evoke a car’s speed dial. This model comes in stainless steel IP black plated with a mat brushed case finish, with a black leather bracelet, with bold padding and black stitching.
All the back sides are engraved with Erik Spiekermann’s signature.
